Grandson Casey was around age 4ish and a favorite place to visit on our weekly Jiichan Outings was the Cal campus in Berkeley – for you Bear Alumni you’ll recognize the Campanile in the photo on the right – In that photo we’re just outside the paleontology building where there is a fine fossil museum where one of the dinosaur displays is of a T-Rex, shown in the photo on the left – On this day we were going thru the museum and the secretary of the school chatted with Casey about his interest in dinosaurs and fossils and Casey told her he was going to grow up to be a paleontologist – Impressed that he knew what that was but more that he could discuss intelligently about dinosaurs she asked if he’d like to talk with a professor – He said yes, and she went to get someone to talk with him – Turned out all the profs were either in lectures or out of the building but would he like to talk with a grad student…? This grad student came out and started talking with me and I referred him to Casey, and the two carried on a nice discussion of the dinosaurs on display in the museum – Pretty impressed the grad student asked Casey if he’d like to go into the inner sanctum sanctorum, the place where they keep all the bones and artifacts from all their digs, a place no one except faculty and grad students were permitted to enter…! Casey was in heaven, and looked at a host of bones and skeletons and skulls and has questions to ask – the grad student was duly impressed when we left to check out a couple of climbing trees at the foot of the Campanile…
