Well, the movers came yesterday promptly at 9:00 as they were scheduled, and they set about assessing each room with the place in the truck for each item, or at least the larger items – They figured out that our large screen TV would be blanketed and placed facing into our mattress, which would give added protection – I would not have thought of that – all throughout the day the men came up with creative solutions to what were to me impossible needs, and they did it with little time to consider – They were great…!

I found very early in their working that I have a seriously faulty stereotype of moving men – wrong on so many counts – I was initially struck by their friendly outreach, and felt as though we could well have been long-time friends in another life – Then throughout the day one thing and another surprised me, blowing massive holes in my stereotypes of this line of work – the younger guy, maybe late 20s in age, has a college degree, and his favorite courses were philosophy – He spoke intelligently about a lot of subjects, from recent popular novels and their authors who they seem to know about their personal lives, to ancient military battles with full discussions of generals on both sides in the distant past of the Near East, and serious discussion of Near Eastern politics today. The other man was a little older, maybe late 40s, and he, too, was educated in much the same way as the younger man – He is Hispanic, and raised as a Catholic, so he has some religious training in that faith – He is now, however, quite clear that he isn’t an indoctrinated pursuer of his faith, and is versed in many other religions of today as well as historical religions.

The two were funny in that their conversations were filled with laughter and joking, and once spent time discussing tv personalities of late-night shows and in mock-voices of their hosts – all the while taking care of the busines of loading our home for transport – The older man described to me his thesis which was based on a book by Shel Silverstein, the title of which escapes me, but his approach was from a philosophical bent – It sounded most elegant and quite intellectual, but I felt if I’d read it It would have been easily understood by this non-philosophical student.

There was one sort of mishap when they got to Cascade Manor to deliver our home to our new home – They checked in at the front desk, one to be put through the protocol for Covid-19 and be cleared to be on campus, but also to connect with Diane who is in charge of all things moving-in – Somehow there was a mistake or missed cue, and the guys ended up waiting for me to connect with them, and there was a 30-minute gap that was lost – I suspect we paid for the time anyway. But, other than that little blip, things went swimmingly perfectly.

The guys had planned to end the delivery by around 5:00, and ended up actually a little after 6:00 – If that mid-course blip hadn’t happened, they would have made their target of 5:00…Barb and I had a good time with these guys, and enjoyed their work for us – the fact that they were these wonderfully expanded personalities who worked in this amazing way made it all the more enjoyable – Moving is one of the most difficult of life’s experiences, but for us these guys made it a memorable and fine time.
