Downsizing XIV-A

Moving Day Mishap: The moving day playout was great in terms of overall success on many fronts. It was also enjoyable as these kinds of things often aren’t, but in our case it was in large measure because of the personalities and character of the two movers. It was most satisfying.

There was, however, a major blip of my own doing that caused considerable distress and wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth – Full disclosure, it was fully my fault for what unfolded to cause me so much distress. I misplaced all of my meds, and we couldn’t find them anywhere once we were in our apartment. Night fell without finding them.

Here’s the background of a masterful plan: I distinctly remember putting all my medications in a special box, and placing the box in my car the morning of our move so I’d have them always with me during the move day. I then basically forgot about it knowing that I had a fool-proof plan to ensure I would have my meds when I needed them. Where my plan ran afoul of my mind was that I forgot I had placed the box for safekeeping in my car. That happens with me a little bit. No, really.

Then, during the move I thought at one point I had brought the box into our apartment, but couldn’t remember where I’d set it down. We searched the whole apartment with me retracing what I had done to bring the box into the apartment. I was certain I had brought them inside. Nothing worked to find the medicines.

Because I couldn’t find them by the end of moving day, I missed my meds for my evening meal, something that’s not a good thing with these medications. I had a fitful night’s sleep, and awoke Saturday morning in a rather grumpy and sleepy state. I had decided that since we couldn’t find the meds, that I would have to go across the street to Rite Aid (Yes, it is literally across the street with a big sign glaring at our second-floor window) and request of the pharmacist an emergency supply of all my medications until my physician could set a new prescription for them. At least that was what I thought would be the procedure the pharmacist would have to follow.

As one final measure, I stopped by my car on the way to the pharmacy to check the car again, and lo and behold, there was my special box containing my meds where I had so smartly placed them. The problem was of my own making, because I promptly forgot that I’d placed the box in the car for safekeeping. Such a smart plan, and I had to go and forget the brilliance of it and put it out of my mind.

Well, all is right with the universe again, at least till the next memory vortex misalignment – In the end, I only missed the one mealtime dose of my medications, and am now in our new home returned to my regimen as prescribed.

About journeysofabentmind

Gordon is a Nisei, a second generation American of Japanese descent born in 1938 whose family owned a farm outside of Atwater, California in the San Joaquin Valley. His world was abruptly changed when on December 7, 1941 Japan’s Imperial Navy launched an early morning attack on Pearl Harbor. Thus began a chain of events that resulted in his family’s forced evacuation and internment in a “relocation center” in Colorado during the war. After the war Gordon spent his teenage years in school and working on the family farm. He attended U.C. Berkeley and graduated in 1960 and went on to the Graduate School of Social Welfare at Berkeley earning a Masters in Social Welfare in 1963. He worked in a number of social service settings and last worked as a case manager for developmentally challenged clients in San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin Counties until he retired in 2000. When his wife Barbara retired in 2007 they moved to Eugene, Oregon following their children and grandchildren. Gordon lives with his wife of 55 years and close to the four grandchildren and life is just good.

  2. This is not an uncommon occurrence in our home – I believe it started back when I was at Cal in the late 50s, or maybe after we were married in February of ’61, my mind just goes into neutral a lot – When our kids were growing up they used to refer to me as the absent minded professor, and aptly so – It has cause untold mess in our marriage over the years….
