Words are fascinating just in themselves. What are they but a group of letters strung together with a certain sound associated with each specific letter. Together they represent something we’ve come in unison to agree about, and hearing those sounds we know we’ve just heard a word – or a sentence – and it meant something. Continue reading

Sara ten Broek drove her Volkswagen bus down the dirt road at breakneck speed, leaving a rooster plume of dust hanging in the dry desert air. It was hot, very hot. The merciless sun had sapped all the moisture out of the air by mid-morning, making it almost painful to breathe.
The old grandfather clock in the hall chimed the half-hour. Owl looked up from his book and over his reading glasses at the hands of the clock face; it was 12:30 in the morning. They were late. He turned his head toward the picture window overlooking the western meadow where blithe spirits of light and shadow played under a full moon. He looked back at the grandfather clock, and blinked one eye.
The backpack suited her physically, being small and light, but it was large enough to hold a small camera and two lenses, good enough for her budding love with camera and film. It was still dark and Sara stumbled several times as they hiked along the winding trail toward the top of the mountain.
The music rises to a crescendo, heavy with strings, salted with mellow brass and percussion, and the atmosphere in the auditorium swells to a rising, pulling the spirit upward and toward the ornate gilt ceiling, soaring until the heart is filled. The darkness and shadows above give way as the harshness of a bare lightbulb, hanging above the master light control panel, probes into the baffles above the stage curtains.
Cheri slipped her hand into her Grandfather’s as they approached the antique store on the corner of Columbus Avenue and Fifth. The sun was partially hidden, and there was a slight breeze blowing down the canyons of tall buildings. On any other day, Cheri would be craning her neck to see the tops of the buildings against the sky, they were always so impressive, but today she had something more important on her mind.
