Mama Diana and baby Xander

grandchildren4_39Mama Diana and baby Xander – I’m terrible with ages so hazarding a guess as to age here is a risk and I’m risk averse around ages – On the other hand I’d guess that Xander must be 8 months or so, certainly less than a year – But that’s a guess only so don’t hold me to it in any legal sense – Otherwise just check it out and enjoy it for what it is, a perspective on life… Continue reading →

December 7, 1941

Talk 017On December 7, 1941 the imperial navy of the nation of Japan launched a sneak attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor on the island of Hawaii. This led due to wartime hysteria and racial prejudice to the forced evacuation and internment of 120,000 persons of Japanese heritage away from the west coast of America. My family spent from August 1941 through October 1945 in a concentration camp in the southeastern corner of Colorado, a bleak desert-like area of the state. This is my family, and that’s me the elder of the two sons dressed in my patriotic navy uniform…

Eugene welcoming committee

OregonMove_101206_001Soon after our arrival in Eugene we were visiting the downtown area and came across these two denizens as a sort of welcoming committee – Being from Berkeley, CA, this was something that made us feel right at home – We’d heard there was a 60s hippie contingent living in town and this confirmed its presence for us… Continue reading →

Midnight Sun Rising

owls10Snowy Owl banked to his left, and caught the updraft coming off the butte overlooking the river. He could feel the weather was changing — the long endless winter night was drawing to a close, and the land of the midnight sun was beginning to emerge from its peaceful slumber. Below him, Arctic Wolf was padding along a well-beaten path through the snow alongside the river. Caribou herds had cut this path through the snows early last fall, using it to cross the low-lying tundra plains. Wolf was lean, and some would say mean, from his long night foraging, from his hunts late into the extended Arctic night. This is the life of a lone wolf in the Arctic wilds. Continue reading →

The World’s 101 Worst Cow Jokes ~ Vol. I

Puns Vol. IOne day I was talking with my grandson, Casey, and he wanted me to tell him the world’s worst joke. I asked him why the world’s worst joke, and he said he thought it would be funny. I told him I didn’t know any jokes, world’s worst or otherwise, but that I would try to think of some.

That started me thinking about what I thought of humor, what tickled my funny Continue reading →

A Knight Changes Today

knights01Knight Pancho Sanza leaned against an ancient oak tree and looked thoughtfully out over the pleasant valley as the rays of the sun at first light bathed the castle walls in a warm amber glow. He was tired from his long journey home, but was still vigilant and alert. “It is deceivingly beautiful, isn’t it?” came a soft voice behind him. Knight Sanza’s faithful traveling companion, Donkey Hotei, stepped to his side and the two looked out over the tranquil valley. “Why do you say that?” asked Knight Sanza. “What the eye beholds is so beautiful, yet beneath the surface there is such great evil,” came the reply. The two stood in the growing morning light, and watched in silence for a long time. “They say a Continue reading →

The World’s 101 Worst Military Jokes ~ Vol. VI

Vol. VI

The battles of Lexington and Concord saw the first shots fired by colonists against the disciplined and well-organized militia of Mother England. Lost in the annals of this dark time, upstaged by the midnight ride of Paul Revere, was the actions of 16 year old Sybil Ludington, eldest daughter of colonel Henry Ludington, commander of the 7th Regiment of the Duchess County Militia. Sybil rode 40 miles through heavy rains, twice the distance ridden by Revere, to alert and muster her father’s militiamen in defense of Danbury, Connecticut which was coming under siege by the British. While the colonials Continue reading →

Evensong

eden03a

The day was cool, and the air still. Dew had formed on the shrubs and grasses just before dawn, and now dampened his ankles as he walked through them. He followed her lithe figure through the brush as she made her way down to the pool where she loved to come to watch the animals gather to drink. Morning was the best time for this – everything was quiet, and the waters the least disturbed. There was the all familiar calm throughout the land as the sun rose, and the lavender and pink light of pre-dawn gave way to the blue-white of morning. It was beginning to warm, though he knew it would not become too uncomfortable. Continue reading →
