“Two Faces: Introduction”

Central California in late 1941 was quiet and slow-paced, tranquil and idyllic in many ways. It was in this haven that Nina and Gordon had met as second graders and grew into fast friends. Their families lived on the same side of town just outside the city limits, hers on her grandfather’s dairy, his on his parent’s peach and almond farm. The world beyond was in turmoil and the drums of world conflict were pounding a beat in Europe that shook our national shores. Continue reading →

The Flute Maker and the Song of the Buffalo

buffaloindian08

Shadows creeped up the side of the bluff overlooking the Valley of the Dunes, as the sun passed low over the endless desert and nestled momentarily in the crook of the Whispering Mountains, before slipping behind the distant ridges.

Brave Turtle watched in silence as the skies over the western horizon gradually shifted from the amber of eventide through shades of lavender to deep violet, and then into the Continue reading →

The Enchanted Valley

peregrinefalcon01Ulysses had been gone since Saturday, and Calle was worried. Curiosity was his middle name, and being here in the woods provided him an unending source of distractions. At home he always spent a lot of his time outside, but he was always back before sundown, and this was not like him. Ulysses was only six months old, a gift for Calle’s seventh birthday. She had picked Ulysses as a name because this kitten was always into everything, and reminded her of the voyages of Continue reading →

The World’s 101 Worst Musician Jokes ~ Vol. II

Puns Vol. II

What is a word worth? Did Wordsworth every wonder? Do words have value? Does its meaning affect what you think of it? Is it worth any fuss from you for any reason? Does it matter in the greater scheme of things? Maybe yes, maybe no.

Do you ever think of a word and wonder how its meaning came about? Have you ever in that mindless state of daydreaming had a word do a flash dance Continue reading →

The Untouchables

gangsters01

It was a dark and stormy night. The cold nor’wester coming in off the Great Lakes, brought the chill to a minus 40 degrees, keeping those with any brain in their heads indoors. It was the worst February in anyone’s memory, and everyone complained bitterly, though to no avail.

The cold wintry streets of Chicago, carrying the lifeblood of the city, also openly carried the liquid gold of the mob in the form of moonshine whiskey. Hundreds of speakeasies Continue reading →

The Day the Universe Tilted

Galileo04“It is told there is a man in Padua who has created a most wondrous scientific instrument,” said the old traveler.

“It is so,” said his traveling companion matter-of-factly, “but it was not in Padua – it was Venice.”

“Hmmm, so it was,” replied the old traveler, remembering.

The mid-day sun beat down on the two travelers as they made their way along the dusty road. The winds had long since died down, leaving the air heavy and oppressive, giving no respite to the weary travelers. Continue reading →

The World’s 101 Diabolically Worst Puns ~ Vol. VII

Puns Vol. VII copy

Sample Pun: “I wonder, do Eskimo salesmen use their cell phones to make cold calls?”

Those of us who are introverts are lucky in many ways, not the least of which is we’ll never be bored. If things around us are going too slowly or we lose interest in them for a variety of reasons, not to worry, we have a built-in “backdoor” that opens on a fascinating world within that utterly blows away boredom. It is not falling but leaping down Alice’s rabbit hole; it is storming the castle in the Land of Oz; it is crossing the River Styx with safe passage back; it is the portal to the shores where unicorns bound and Merlin holds court. The World’s 101 Worst Puns ~ Vol. III

Puns Vol. III

No one knows with any certainty how language started in the dawn of human life. Primitive humans probably grunted a lot and gesticulated to convey what was on their minds. Over eons those grunts morphed into regular sounds recognizable by those within the same family groupings. Sounds would slowly grow into what we would call “words.” Continue reading →

The Ultimate Book of Dad Jokes

This is an anthology of 1001 puns I initially started working on to please my grandchildren, and it grew like Topsy into a major work that first entertained them much to my delight, then morphed into a major book soon to be published.

Layout 1

Around mid-2008 I embarked on a fascinating journey with my grandchildren that centered around joke telling. Casey had asked me to tell him “the world’s worst joke,” but when I explained that I didn’t know any his disappointment drove me to try to come up with at least one good joke. This began a series of jokes shared with Casey and Venice, and later with Xander and Teiya, of jokes having to do with of all things, cows. I cobbled together a batch of 10-12 Continue reading →
