I recently re-watched The West Wing, again – We watched it during its original run on regular TV and loved it for its portrayal of life in and around the White House – We loved it for the people on both sides of the aisle in a time when “cooperation” wasn’t a bad word, and people worked to represent those who sent them to Washington – It was a very nice slice of what was supposed to happen in the corridors of power – And the main people surrounding the president were each different and likeable for their idiosyncrasies and quirks and strengths.
It occurs to me that there couldn’t be a reprise of The West Wing with the current administration as central characters, it just wouldn’t work at all – There is only so much you can do with corruption as the central theme of the administration – It would be short-lived focusing on the power meetings of the ultra-upper levels of the 1% roaming the halls of the White House, and it wouldn’t sit well for very long showing white supremacists and Nazis sitting in on strategy meetings – And the surface image of the White House with the Stars and Stripes being replaced with the Stars and Bars and the Nazi flag wouldn’t go with the theme of a United States of America.
It’s too bad that it couldn’t happen, but that’s the reality of today…
